Have you heard of this? It seems to be everywhere lately and I most recently saw it on the Today Show as an idea for healthy snacks for kids. I had wanted to try it for a while and when my 5 year old asked for ice cream the other night and we had frozen bananas, I decided to give it a try. The result: Amazing! We all loved it.

One chain restaurant that seems to be expanding across the United States at a rapid pace is Panera Bread. One just opened up in my small home-town of La Canada, Ca and one just popped up next to the Salon I go to and there is a new one down the street from my work in Malibu. This chain's growth started to spark my interest, so I went on their website to see if they had any nutrition information. Panera Bread has an awesome menu guide with a nutrition calculator included. You can go through their menu online and it will break down all of the ingredients in each dish so you can play around with the food choices until you reach a meal with calories within your metabolism budget! I love figs and dates--they are two of my favorite fruits. I like them because they tend to be quite sweet and can make wonderful desserts. They can also be served with more savory recipes like salads, curries or meat dishes. Both fruits pair really well with nuts, so eating a few dates or figs with some walnuts or almonds can make a well-balanced snack.

It seems counterintuitive. If I am an extremely active athlete burning hundreds (or even thousands) of calories during training sessions, I should expect to see weight loss. But that may not necessarily be the case. I see this often actually; a friend, family member or client sets a goal of running a race (10K, 15K, half marathon, full marathon, etc.) as a way of losing weight and actually finds that they gain weight. I came across this article recently and thought it explained this phenomenon well:

I've been hearing a lot about this New York Times best selling book that promotes a new diet/lifestyle revolution called The 4-Hour Body by Timothy Ferriss, also the author of The 4-Hour Workweek. So, I decided to check it out. Before getting too deep into it, I've already added his name to the list of authors that keep me in business trying to undo the damage of misleading nutrition advice.
