Growing up as the baby of three has its advantages—I was spoiled by all my family and I relished in it. My brother and sister both participated in sports in elementary school but I discovered my talent was singing. I was a normal kid and was encouraged to play outside and participate in P.E. at school because of my weight.

Our family gatherings were always centered on hearty, good tasting, not so healthy food and we were taught to eat everything on our plate. Throughout my childhood and teenage years I grew up being very self-conscious about how big, tall, and overweight I was. I was teased and called names but I overcame the embarrassment by being the “funny girl.” All the while I was still not feeling good about myself. I was always trying a new diet. You name it, my sister, my mom, and I tried them all.

When it came time for college I gained 30 pounds my freshman year and I gained even more weight throughout my other college years. I found that my inner conflict continued after I had graduated Nursing school. Caring for others always felt right but I never really took time to take care for myself. How could I teach patients what to do when I don’t practice it myself?

After moving to Texas I found myself at my top weight of 280 pounds and wearing a size 22-24W. I sought professional help from a doctor and she monitored my weight loss medication. I lost 50 pounds but I soon gained the weight back. Being overweight is hard and it is not an easy life. I did a good job at hiding my embarrassment even though I felt uncomfortable and out of control.

Luckily, I was still healthy and the weight had not yet caused permanent physical damage. I still had time to turn my health patterns around and I deserve to be healthy. I spend money on “stuff” all the time…why not make an investment in my life? I also want to start a family and I don’t want all the potential complications that go along with being overweight and pregnant. I have always been a fan of The Biggest Loser and would watch people transform their bodies. Could I do it to? Would I fail? Was I afraid to fail? Or was I afraid to succeed?

I asked my sister to go with me to The Biggest Loser Resort Ivins. My goal was to find a workout regimen that I loved and that I could make a way of life. My time at BLR was truly magical and it changed my life for the better. The Resort is a safe environment and the other guests are such an inspiration. I learned more about eating healthy and being active in one week than I did in nursing school. Finally, I have acquired the final pieces to the puzzle for permanent success.

I am happy to say that I am 100lbs less today from my top weight. I am in my best shape of my life and I can visualize my goals. I am no longer overwhelmed. I am happy to share my story with anyone who will listen.

Thank you The Biggest Loser Resort at Fitness Ridge for your AMAZING trainers and staff! I will never forget you!
