When I first arrived at the Biggest Loser Resort a year ago, I got winded walking up a flight of stairs. I was slow and often got left behind. I was afraid to fall, afraid to exercise too hard, and afraid to push myself. After spending seven non-consecutive weeks spread out over the last year at the different Biggest Loser Resort locations, I have become a different person.

At first, I thought of the resort as a great place to lose weight and get active. I came home from my first visit in May of 2012 and started doing some aerobics classes every week. I ate a little healthier, and I certainly understood the emotional component of my weight struggles somewhat better.

Each visit thereafter, I came back for various reasons, most of them weren’t about the weight. I took advantage of the fantastic services of the therapists and life coaches. I faced my fears and pushed my physical limits in the gym and out on the hikes. I made real connections with people who have become supportive friends throughout my journey.

Now it is May of 2013. Three weeks from now, I will be participating in my first half ironman event-yes, voluntarily. This time I am on my way back to the resort to devote some serious time to my triathlon training.

Oh, yeah, and incidentally I am no longer morbidly obese. Better than that is that I have transformed from couch potato to endurance athlete. I no longer slow people down. They work hard to keep up with me - when they can. I am immeasurably happier and more together emotionally. These days my friends and family come to me for advice with their problems.

Sure, The Biggest Loser Resort at Fitness Ridge is a great place to kick start or work on your weight loss. For me it has become a place where I challenge myself. Fitness Ridge is a safe, supportive place where I put in the work to accomplish daring goals—it is where I become the person I have always wanted to be.

My journey is not just about weight loss anymore—it’s not even my primary consideration these days. Now my focus is on being a strong, healthy person in every aspect of my life.
